Our Vegetable Glycerin is derived entirely from vegetable oil and is pure. Often used straight or mixed with peppermint oil and administered orally to soothe and lubricate air passages, allowing for easier breathing. In this application, typically 30 cc is administered orally using an oral syringe prior to exercise. It is often used to dilute other products and is preferred over other agents because it is soothing and moisturizes. Glycerin is water-soluble, making it extremely easy to remove. It can also be used as a sweat by itself or diluted with alcohol. Glycerin can be used to remove rundown patches and soften dry skin. It has also been used to soften leather.
OrallyGlycerin lubricates the throat of the horse. Sometimes it is mixed with Peppermint oil, adding the aromatic and possibly decongestant quality of the peppermint oil. Peppermint is also known to soothe the stomach and help in ulcer situationshorses usually love peppermint. Often, when the weather is real cold or if it has been extremely dry, many people will administer glycerin orally prior to exercise to aid in lubricating the throat whether it has peppermint added or not. We recommend 1 ounce or 30 cc per dose. Two doses in the morning are possible, but for the most part, a dose is considered 1 ounce. If your horse has suffered from a cold or allergies, glycerin and peppermint mixes will not reduce mucus as Wind Aid will. However, glycerin is used in Wind Aid for its lubricating quality. If you have both glycerin and Wind Aid available, Wind Aid is the preferred option.
The second use for glycerin is mixed with other topicals. For example, a mixture of Choates liniment, Witch Hazel, and Glycerin can be used as a beginner’s leg brace. Glycerin helps moisturize and soften the skin while enhancing the effectiveness of other treatments.
