Please note the ice packs may be melted by the time you receive your package, but they have done the job of protecting the medications during the shipment. Medications and time-sensitive items will be shipped Monday through Wednesday before 2:00 pm Eastern Time via 2-day service. Zycortal Suspension (Desoxycorticosterone Pivalate)is an injectable foruse as replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiency in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addisons Disease).

Desoxycorticosterone is a corticosteroid with primarily mineralocorticoid activity, similar to aldosterone. In the kidney, desoxycorticosterone causes sodium and chloride ion retention, and hydrogen and potassium ion excretion, creating an osmotic gradient that promotes water absorption from the renal tubules. This increases extracellular fluid volume, leading to blood volume expansion, improved venous return to the heart, and increased cardiac output.

Side Effects:

It has been demonstrated that Desoxycorticosterone Pivalate Injectable Suspension is well tolerated with a low incidence of side effects. In a small percentage of treated dogs, depression, excessive thirst and urination, digestive, skin and coat changes, weakness, and injection site reactions (pain, abscesses) may occur. Some of these effects may resolve with adjustments in dose or interval or concomitant glucocorticoid administration. Do not use in pregnant dogs or in dogs that are suffering from congestive heart disease, severe renal disease, or edema.

Precautions:

Do not use Zycortal Suspension in dogs that have previously had a hypersensitivity reaction to desoxycorticosterone pivalate. CAUTIONS: Any dog presenting with severe hypovolemia, dehydration, pre-renal azotemia and inadequate tissue perfusion (Addisonian crisis) must be rehydrated with intravenous fluid (saline) therapy before starting treatment with Zycortal Suspension. Avoid inadvertent intravenous injection which may have an adverse effect on the dog. The effectiveness of Zycortal Suspension may be reduced if potassium-sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone, are administered concurrently. Use Zycortal Suspension with caution in dogs with congestive heart disease, edema, severe renal disease or primary hepatic failure. Desoxycorticosterone pivalate may cause polyuria, polydipsia, increased blood volume, edema and cardiac enlargement. Excessive weight gain may indicate fluid retention secondary to sodium retention. The safety of desoxycorticosterone pivalate has not been established in breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs and dogs less than 6 months of age.
